Despite the fact that she is interested in technology and might have been one of the first people in the US with an Apple computer – as an undergraduate she dated Steve Jobs, who gave her a Macintosh – she prefers to write her novels longhand, on a pad. She met her husband, theatre director David Herskovits, at the university, and is talking to me today from their home in Brooklyn. But she studied English at the University of Pennsylvania and by the time she was doing an MA at St John’s College, Cambridge, she had her heart set on writing and was working on what would be her first novel, The Invisible Circus (1994).
